Dia de los Muertos
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated throughout Mexico on 1 November of each year. The bread above is a traditional bread made and available at the bakeries today and during the weekend. It is a national holiday and normally banks will be closed. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions connected with the holiday include building altars honoring the dead using skulls, food and flowers like the picture below. Family gatherings are held at the cemetery of homes with favorite foods and beverages of the departed. This holiday has origins dating back hundreds of year to the Aztec.
